You should be able to move the lock button up and down manually. If you hear the actuator operating in the door when you do the central locking, despite the fact that the button doesn't move, then your actuator is still good. It's basically a solenoid.
As for the jamming of the mechanism, you'll just have to take a look by removing the inner panel. Take a look at the plastic pivot tabs which press fit into the metal of the inside of the door, on which the lock hardware is mounted. These tend to break. If you need to replace them, buy an extra because you might break the first one trying to install it, and they're cheap. The hardest part of the job is getting the inner door panel back on. It doesn't want to seat itself in the window channel up on top. You have to lean the bottom of the panel away from the lower part of the door, engaging the plastic lip in the window channel and sliding it all the way down to its final resting place.
