Sometime when the engine is warm, remove the dipstick and take a whiff of the fumes from the crankcase - see if it's the same smell.
If it is, the gasket on the dipstick (under the cap) may be bad (cracked or hardened). And/or there may be a problem with the crankcase ventilation system - check the double hose fitting on the top right (looking from the front) of the valve cover. See if the grommet that holds it is loose or cracked. Check the hoses connected to it. Also the check valve in the hose that goes from that fitting to the intake manifold fails often - search this BBS for "check valve" to see instructions on testing it.
