When I replaced the heater matrix the smell lasted for months since I did not manage to remove all the antifreeze from the ducting, so even though air does not go over the heater it still went over the ducting. Also
the antifreze flows through the heater all the time still giving a smell in the area. Suggest putting a finger into the air outlets in the front footwells and seeing if there is antifreeze present if not already done. If dry, may not be heater. Not an expensive job (heater about £65) to replace but very awkward and took me about a day. There was a good write up and pictures on this bulletin board which helped with the Haynes manual.
