I'm always surprised when this question comes up.

Flowrate is not a common problem that causes inadequate cooling. In the rare cases where it might be a problem, the problem would more likely be hydraulic (restrictions) rather than with the pump.

The water pump is run by the drive belt. The flowrate pumped depends on the engine speed. That's one reason why the temp gauge goes up at idle.

Take a look at a water pump impeller. It is made of cast iron. It will last several lifetimes of your vehicle. I have seen looked at the Saab water pump impeller after 150K of use and the impeller is indistinguishable from a new impeller. The weak points on water pumps are the seals and the bearings in that order. A Saab or comparable (OEM) water pump will almost never have any problem with the impeller.

If you want to run cooler, you need to clean the cooling system to eliminate the fouling, especially in the radiator. Flush with Prestone Superflush following the recommended flushing procedure. Also, you can clean the radiator fins with a high pressure hose, but this is less effective than cleaning the coolant side. Replace the thermoswitch with an 82C switch if the fan is kicking at a high temperature.
