I use my 93 2 litre LPT CDE for pulling a caravan (about 1100 kg) in the UK. Pulls it quite well up to speed limit of 60 mph. Never tried a Land Cruiser for comparison but better than the old 900i we had. The car handbook gives its towing limits as about (from memory so could be a bit out), weight on towball 70 kg, towing 1500 kg up a 12% (1 in 8 )hill, towing up a 15% (1 in 6) hill 1300 kg. The limits are based on the wheels not losing grip going up a hill. It is generally recommended though to not exceed 85% of the car kerb weight for stability so if car is about 1400 kg then about 1200 kg trailer should be ok. The VIN plate on the car also gives the maximum vehicle plus trailer weight when fully loaded.
The towbar, ball and all the electrical bits for 12N and 12S sockets cost about £60 from Towsure in Sheffield. Not too difficult to fit, worst bit was removing rear towing loop since the bolts had rusted.
