When I did the adjustment last year on my 93 CDE after rebuilding the gearbox I had a lot of bother setting it up. The Saab book says set up in reverse gear, the Haynes I think was 4th gear but neither worked that well. In the end I think I put the gear box into possibly 4th from under the car using the rubber coupler with the selector rod pinch bolt slack. Then from inside the car put the lever into 4th ? position, used 4mm allen key to lock into position, returned under the car and then tightened pinch bolt. Possibly best way is to find which gear position corresponds to using the 4mm rod and then using rubber coupler to put fully into that gear, then tighten pinch bolt. After this all gears were easy to select.
When I first put the gearbox back together though I got the synchro hub sleeve in the wrong position on 3rd/4th gears so when in the car found I could not get these or 5th fully home, despite having worked off the car.
I also replaced the clutch and slave cylinder. Clutch had juddered when cold and pedal had required a lot of effort to push down but after replacing was nice and light. A year later though is heavy again, must be a Saab thing (Sachs clutch), same happened on a 900i we had.
