If you've never rebuilt an automatic transmission, I have to believe that the 9000 ZF is the last tranny I'd want to learn on. Autoboxes require specialized skills and tools, and the ZF seems to be particularly evil. I know of a few transmission shops that won't even touch one. Seeing as they do transmissions all the time, I suspect it isn't because 'the ZF is too easy to work on."
If you're looking for a project to learn, aren't in a rush, and won't sweat it if it blows up after a few miles, then go for it. If you're looking to save money, then by all means, don't even think about it. For a decent rebuild, you're going to drop close to $1K in replacement parts. PUt it together wrong, and you'll trash them just about right away.
I had one tranny shop that really does know what it's doing rebuild a 9K tranny. They rebuilt it twice, each time trashing itself during the test drive. They ended up buying a different used tranny and rebuilding that, because they could never figure out why the first one kept eating itself. Perhaps some minor alignment issue in the case - they never figured it out. Now, they could have been a bunch of ham-fists, but they've rebuilt other trannies quite successfully.
Of course, there are folks out there that do it in their basements quite successfully. However, I'll bet that a 9000 ZF wasn't the first one they tried.
