i agree with ari.
it is an extremely complicated task.
still...
i rebuilt the autobox on the wife's 86 turbo 4 years ago. while i had tackled manual trannies before, i had never attempted fixing an auto.
when we sold the car, 1 year ago, it had accumulated 35,000 miles on that tranny and it was still running well.

costs for hard and soft parts came to approximately $300.
it took 2 weeks to do and required several days of learning how an automatic works, and what can go wrong with one.
i ordered the saab workshop manual from my saab dealer for 4hp-18 trans for years 86 thru 93(this manual is an absolute must) for $35. the manual gave me an overview of how this particular auto works, charts for trouble shooting, and an idea of what special tools are needed.
i found a local parts place that sold rebuild kits that includes all seals, gaskets, bushings and clutches. thru them i got my hands on some industry magazines that cater to auto trans rebuilders and obtained sources for hard parts if necessary. those same magazines provided me with sources for the special tools needed for the project. then i had a machine shop make them...probably another 200 bucks.

i was also lucky: a local junkyard had a an 87 9000 with its' auto trans in the trunk and in pieces. it cost me $50. i knew what the inside of that transmission looked like before i ever had to take one apart. it also provided a ready supply of hard parts.
in retrospect, i suspect that acquisition was key.

so it is doable. but, all the caveats that ari mentioned still apply.
but if you've got the time...go for it.
