The typical hatch release problems are (1) the linkage from the release mechanism (above license plate) to the latch (at the bottom of the hatch) falls off. This is due to the ball and socket that separates. Or, (2) the release handle itself breaks, usually due to age and corrosion.
You didn't mention finding the linkage off, and did talk about slamming, so I'm going to assume it's alignment. The latch itself (at the bottom of the hatch) is adjustable, and it can be finicky. If you set it too low, the hatch will be loose and rattle. But it will latch easier. If you set it too high, it doesn't want to latch (slamming required), and sometimes the extra loading on the latch means it doesn't want to release.
When you crawl into the trunk, what are you releasing? I'm assuming you use a tool to open the latch.
I suggest that you slightly loosen the two bolts holding the latch in place and slide it a hair closer to the U bar it grabs onto. Do this in small increments.
