I'm not sure if the '98s still flash out the codes since they have the OBD-II. But the good news is that many large chain autoparts stores will "loan" you an OBD-II tool - you offically buy it, use it, then bring it back for a full refund, often within five minutes! In Chicago, Murray's Discount Auto Parts provides this service, hoping that you will find that you need a part and buy it there.
My wife's car has OBD-II and I have reset the Oxygen sensor CEL code a couple of times. It goes away for months then reappears. Eventually I will get around to replacing them (car has total of 4 - $$$$) or convince the manufacturer to do it for me.
