Saab 9000 LPT Acceleration

I have a 1994 Saab 9000 LPT automatic, acceleration is a bit slow after pulling away, if I put my foot down I'm into kick down, this occurs all the time whenever I need to pick up speed. Shouldn't there be plenty of acceleration, before needing to go into kick down. On the odd occasion, I can put my foot nearly to the floor with out going into kick down, but most of the time when I put pressure on the gas pedal I'm into kick down.
I hope somebody can make sense of what I'm trying to say, as I'm not very mechanicaly minded.
