I have the cover off now and did not have to remove the sump. I have found the chain glide broken where the tensioner would normally push against it. (this would explain noise)now I must replace the glide and I guess the chain. The timming chain seems in great shape with no play inside cover and very little between cam gears. What is the balance chain really doing?I understand that these are only found in the newer engines. Mine being a 96' is new enough to have this. Some interesting info on the timing chain that I found was the (gold) links that the book describes as being on top of the timing marks when engine is at TDC are really 3 links off. All 3 marks are off so it is in time but makes me wonder if this was done at the factory or not. No sighs of anyone ever taking that cover off before , all looks very original and factory sealed. (I wonder though) It looks like the balance chain and the glide and (maybe the adjuster?) although it looks fine. Any ideas for parts $$
