my guess is that they couldn't get the car into reverse and was forcing the shifter without lifting the reverse lock out.
I would check that they haven't damaged the reverse lock out and other things in the shift linkage.
Granted very few cars these days have a reverse lockout like our Saabs but that is no excuse for the tire shop not to ask your help when they got into trouble.
I have no idea how the alignment or mounting the tires could trigger the light. My guess is that when they did the alignment, they left the key in the ignition position and that might drain an already weak battery and triggered something in the process.
I really would ask to talk to the general manager of the shop, unless the general manager is on the employee's side.
Again, they should have told you what they did. I absolutely hate to hear experiences like these.
