Unfortunately the clanking/clicking sound from engine compartment may indicate what so ever bigger or smaller failure or problem - thus You should first try to clearly locate the "place" for the sound.
For locating the sound you can use a smallish rubber hose as stethoscope. Even a big screw driver works (almost even better): press the tip on engine "parts" and listen from the handle. With both tools be careful of moving parts - especially the electrical cooling fan!
As people have listed already you could try to locate the sound on:
- Hydraulic valve lifters (under the top cover)
- Timing chain (under the cover on the "serpentine belt end" of the engine)
- Serpentine belt and it's adjuster.
- Fuel injection nozzles.
- Fuel Injection system Pressure regulator
- APC aka BPC solenoid valve
- AC compressor
- Charcoil (evaporation) canister
etc. etc.
Also do you hear the sound only when car is moving or have you tried to rev' the engine on standstill / on neutral?
