If you are talking about replacing the entire cable, from the sender all the way to the instrument cluster in the dashboard, I'd say rather labor intensive. It would mean taking apart the giant wiring harness that goes behind the dash, to get at that one wire. I'd propose a different solution:
Replace just the section of wire that's been in the engine compartment. It's a well known fact that several years of 9000 (perhaps 900 as well), '87 included, had problems with disintegrating wire insulation, particularly where bare wire becomes exposed to the elements. However, in my '87, I've had complete success in replacing just the exposed portions of wires. I've heard horror stories from 900 owners, but so far, I don't know that I've heard of problems in the 9000 that go into the harness itself. In any case, it's certainly worth a shot to just replace the end of the wire! If I recall, there is a connector in the 'aquarium' on the drivers side, ie behind the false firewall. You should be able to disconnect the wire there and replace that whole section if you like, and remove that section from the car would certainly make it easier to attach your own end on it.
Good luck!
