There is a failure mode of the tranny where you only have reverse - no forward gears. I had this happen at a busy intersection, and the excitement of backing up into traffic to get onto a side street is not to be missed.
In my case, the internal splines were toast - the tranny needed a complete rebuild. I can't say for sure in your case, but the chances are very good that the transmission is pretty well shot. There are a few 'cheaper' problems with the autobox, but this doesn't sound like one of them.
A rebuilt tranny should be around $2500 installed. There are no new trannies - just rebuilts - and that's just fine. A good rebuilt is a good transmission.
You do have the option of bringing it to a transmission shop that works on ZF trannies. Maybe it is only a shot governor, or the linkage somehow failed such that only reverse works. You could pay for the tow and the diagnosis - probably a couple of hundred dollars - think of it as a bet - you're betting it's a cheap problem, against the loss of the money for the tow and diagnosis. However, I think it's pretty bad news.
You could always do a fluid change. Drain the fluid and pull the filter. If the fluid is burned and filled with particles, and the filter has metal chunks in it, then the tranny is a write-off. There are (should be) no 'partial' rebuilds - If parts are worn, there is no economy in replacing just the worn parts - all parts would be worn. And worn parts give off particles that chew up other parts.
Sorry-
