Sounds like you still like the 9k enough to keep it. No matter what, doing a head gasket is easier than an engine R&R.
When the head was pulled last time, was it checked for warpage? Were there other issues that caused it to fail again? Fresh head bolts used?
The bottom end on the 2.3 is pretty stout-I highly doubt that you're going to have it give up any time soon unless the car's been thrashed with few oil changes through its lifetime so far.
If you're going this far into the engine, also consider replacing the timing chain and maybe even the balance shaft chain.
And if you're close to Des Moines, let me know; I'd be glad to give a hand with manuals and labor.
