Symptom: occasional stall
Last Friday:
Cleaned the throttle-body, AIC and as far as I could reach into intake manifold. Lots of built up sludge. Also adjusted idle slack for accelerator. MPG improved, response was better. Ran fine for two days of local driving.
Sunday:
Stalled twice preceded by unaided revving misfires (several 500 to 2500 RPM trips before it died) while coasting to a light (was not boosting beforehand so do not suspect 1 year old hooter valve). This happened about a mile into 3 mile local road journey both times. Restarted fine and made rest of journey without incident.
Monday:
Replaced Air Filter. Performed adaptation run without incident. After resting it misfired 3 miles into trip on highway at 60MPH. Recovered without stalling. No incident upon return from this 6 mile journey.
Tuesday:
The problem became worse: it misfired, sputtered and/or stalled every time I took it out. Took several restart tries stuck in traffic at a light. Restarting became such an issue that I wouldn't take it out.
Wednesday:
Disconnected the battery ground for an hour.
Inspected innards of DI cassette: no signs of oil leakage
Inspected plugs: uniformly good color, no signs of arcing on insulators. 2 week old NGKs w/1.1 gap
Applied dielectric grease to DI boots for the 1st time.
Checked vacuum/boost lines: no apparent leaks or failed items
Replaced fuel filter (looked pretty old, harness bolt was very rusted)
Added Gumout Fuel Injection Cleaner and filled up with 93 Octane (normally run 87).
It was running very rough to and from the gas station until I remembered to tighten down the DI cassette. Took it for another drive and it was fine.
Thursday:
Ran without incident. Kick-down cable was adjusted...needs more adjusting. Presumed the problem was fixed.
Today:
Stalled twice on two separate local trips while coasting (straight die, no pre-stall revving).
Thoughts:
I feel I'm back where I started on this problem and I'm looking for next steps. The violent rpm race/drop may be attritable to leftover intake slop from the cleaning of the throttlebody/AIC/intake, but I can't be sure. Based on readings of past threads I'm unsure if the AMM is the culprit because the stalls occur relatively early in the drive, but never before I've travelled at least 1 mile. O2 sensor is the next likely candidate, but I'd like to solicit opinions from those more knowledgable than I.
Other recent work this summer:
Alternator replaced. Front motor mount, tranny mount, dogbone (rear lower mount needs replacing). Oil, filter and tranny oil changed. Crack in flexpipe clamped over with some steel (not airtight).
TIA
Tom
