TRJ - Have had a similar problem though not to the same extent as you. The intermitant stall was tracked to the ignition switch occasionally going open circuit. The alternator kept the system running fine until engine revs dropped, the alternator exciter shut down and the engine stopped as if the key was turned off. Restart the engine and everything worked fine. It drove us nuts. The fix was two things. Replace the ignition switch mechanism and tweak the regulator in the alternator circuit so that the alternator was charging at a slow idle. We believe that the previous alternator repair/replace was different to OEM specs, either a larger pulley on the drive of the alternator, or a non-genuine spec regulator was fitted. This may be different to your problem but probably worth a look.
Cheers
Kerry
