I have a couple issues with the cooling system on my 1994 Aero with 110K miles.

1) Twice I've noticed the temperature gauge close in on the red zone. Both times were with the car moving slowly or idling. What I observed both times is the low speed cooling fan did not come on and the high speed fan came on (thankfully without blowing the fuse) just short of the red and cooling down the coolant.

Both occurrences happened since last summer when I had the temperature switch replaced, water pump replaced, and new thermostat. The cooling system has been well maintained. The temperature gauge normally sits at 9 o'clock with sufficient airflow. After the first occurrence I swapped the relays for the low speed cooling fan and the headlights since they are identical. All of this did not prevent the 2nd occurrence.

So from what I know it sounds like the 2 possible culprits are the temperature switch in the radiator or the relay. So without just swapping parts I thought I would do 2 things. Wire an LED to pin 85 under the relay to see if current is flowing in the low amperage side of the relay when cooling should be called for. And wiring a switch in the cabin to ground pin 85 to turn on the fan if the temperature switch does not close the circuit. My question with this is can I simply switch pin 85 to ground or is there any resistance supposed to be there too. I've not played with relays before so I wasn't completely sure about this.

2) At highway speeds on hot days (85F+) the temperature gauge runs higher than the normal 9 o'clock position. At lower speeds the low speed fan is running almost continuously. This sounds to me like the radiator is not as efficient as it used to be in its youth even though I've maintained the cooling system well. Do I really need to replace the radiator? How is your radiator holding up after 10 years of service? Any other culprits to investigate in gaining cooling efficiency?

Thanks for any insights!!!
