How would you be reducing the sidewalls by much by going to 225? The 50 is 50% of 225, sidewall height = 112.5mm. 55% of 205 is 112.75mm. Pretty close if you ask me - I'd argue that .25mm is non-noticeable to you in the car. Thats a 0.07% decrease. Once again, not noticeable.
So once again, the 50 is not an absolute measurement of the sidewall - it is a percentage of the tire width. Thats how you would get the same overall diameter (appoximately) with 225/50 and 205/55
