"If you have your heart set on the wheels, go ahead and try the 205/60 size. If you see a lot wear in the center of the tire, then you would have to cut back to 195/65/15 the next time."
By my calculations, 205/60/15 has a smaller overall diameter than a 195/65/15, so cutting back to a 195/65 is not correct. Perhaps you meant to say that if 205/60/15 doesn't work, you should cut back to 195/60/15 ?
Here are the diameters of some common 9000 tires -
205/55/15 (stock size on my '87) - 23.89"
195/60/15 (several other 1st gen 9000s) - 24.21"
205/60/15 (came on CS models?els) - 24.68"
205/55/16 (stock on CSE/Aero/others?) - 24/98"
I have run 205/60/15 on my '87 in both snow tires and summer tires, and have no problems. My goal was to reduce the ghastly speedometer error (5+ mph at 60 mph), reduce gap in the wheel well without lowering the car, and soften the ride if possible. Works like a charm! I definitely notice the extra sidewall flex, but I'll live with that.
