Please, take this in the best light-
I did a lot of autocrossing in my younger days, and the most important piece of equipment is the driver. One of the fastest cars I ever saw was a guy in a '83 two-door Accord. No, the car wasn't fast, but the driver got absolutely everything out of the car. And you could tell this two ways- first, his times were very low, and second, he didn't look like he was going fast. Smooth is always faster, and quite often the guy that doesn't seem hurried is the fastest. 100% of a car is faster than 40% of a car twice as fast. And tire squeals aside, most of us get much, much less than 100% out of a car.
I had another friend who spent a lot of money trying to go faster by buying faster hardware, or upgrading his ride(s). The good part of this was I got to buy some very nicely upgraded cars from him cheap as he decided that to go faster, he really needed a new Whatevermobile.
Unless you've already done this, find the money to invest in a good driving school. Yes, this sounds like an insult, because we all know that we're good drivers, and all we need is a faster car. But untill you're getting 100% out of your present car, more power will only translate into more tire dust.
With two equally matched drivers, the faster car wins. But I'll bet both you and your friend aren't getting 100% from your cars. You can make this one car faster, or you can make yourself faster in any car. The latter sounds like a better deal.
Can a 60 hp two-stroke Sonett beat a 300 HP modified Corvette or a Porsche 930? Of course not. Well, not exactly true. I have a two-stroke Sonett, and at Lime Rock I have turned in faster lap times than both a modified Corvette and a 930. Why? Because I was a faster driver. Yes, in this case both cars were driven by some pretty sad drivers to give up that much speed to my three-cylinder, but there it is.
