First slide the roof open a few inches, and pry the leading edge of the panel down and away from the steel panel -- there are clips which will release.
Next, slide the roof closed and tilt it open. Reach in the back, grab the headliner panel, and pull it backwards towards the rear of the car. This will disengage the panel from its rear "keepers."
Looking from one side of the car down into the rear of the sunroof opening, you'll notice a metal channel running across underneath the sunroof opening. This is the rain gutter, and is attached to the headliner panel by means of two metal arms, one on each side. Disconnect these arms by pushing them downwards where they clip into the underside of the rain gutter. They should pop out, but be careful not to bend the arms in the process.
Push the rear of the headliner panel, along with the arms for the gutter, out through the rear of the sunroof over the roof of the car. Again, be careful not to bend the arms or to allow them to scratch the paint. You can now withdraw the headliner panel out the rear of the sunroof. You don't need to remove the steel panel.
It's a good idea to position the rain gutter in its "home" position so that rain cannot leak into the car while you're doing your restoration.
Reassembly is the reverse of removal. Don't forget to reconnect the rain gutter!!
Good luck!
