A common topic I know! Just looking for any input, clues, what to try, etc.etc.
Car is 1997 9000 CSE 2.3 FPT. When cold and during the first half-hour or so of running, the car seems OK (maybe not stellar, but not bad). Seems to run smoothly, pull well, boost decently. After about 20-30 mins of driving, it seems to become much flatter all over the range, less eager, with sluggish acceleration and reluctant to give much boost. When cooler, it will boost just into the red on hard accelleration and hold it. When warmer, it struggles to get into the dashed red-orange area, and appears to keep surging up and then back.
First thought is "temp related", but I have the type of gauge which goes to 1/3 up and stays there no matter what. The problem does not occur when the car block reaches "operating temp" but maybe when *something* gets hot??
I have new NGK plugs gapped correctly and a new DI. I have checked the air intake temp sensor and the coolant temp sensor. The air filter looks OK. I have a couple of tanks with injector cleaner.
A Saab specialist upped the base boost pressure for me a bit, which has improved the car overall, but you still get this major change after running for a while. I don't think they drove it long enough to see the problem.
The hooter valve is fine, and I've replaced the vac hose with silicone hose. Visual inspection has not found any other obvious leaks. The PCV valve seems OK. I have checked the APC solenoid and it seems OK.
I did a quick compression check (admittedly not when very warm) and got results that were OK with 25 psi about, but I think I may repeat this after a long drive and note the values more carefully.
My random thoughts are:
* Faulty injector
* Head/valve/lifter problem which is made worse at higher temperature.
* Problem with the cat that gets worse at high temp
* Problem with the lambda that gets worse at high temp
Can anyone give me any pointers or suggestions? Sorry for the long post, but I wanted to include all the relevant info.
Thanks in advance,
John
