It's really not a big deal changing the fuel filter. I've done it dozens of times on Saab's.
The problem with my '98 9K was that the rear banjo fitting would not budge. No matter what I tried, it just wouldn't give. I wound up crushing the end of the filter itself, which caused the connection at that spot to start leaking, so now I couldn't drive the car and had to have it towed.
The shop had to use an air tool on it to get the bolt out of the banjo fitting. I've read on this bb where others have had similar problems, but usually the bolt would give.
I would go ahead and try it out. As Kevin stated, pull the fuel pump fuse either before you start the car, or as the car is running, and allow it to stall. This will relieve the pressure in the system.
I usually put a small can or aluminum tray (last night's dinner take-home tray?) under the filter since there will still be some fuel that will run out of the fittings as you remove them.
Be sure to use a wrench to hold the end of the filter as you use another wrench on the banjo fitting to keep the filter from spinning. And keep the holder attached to the filter until both fittings have been removed.
