I will always jump in to defend the auto!!!!!
Makes no difference if it is an auto. The only problem with this is that you have no idea how it was cared for before. Was the fluid changed religiously? Did the previous owner have a lead foot, use the kickdown feature constantly, enjoy "jack-rabbit" starts? These are the things that WILL significantly decrease the longevity, if not break, an auto as opposed to a stick. But as I have stated in the past, there are many more posts on this bb for problems with sticks than there are for autos.
The auto "supposedly" lasts 100K miles. After that, it's on borrowed time. Again, this is all due to the maintenance level of the tranny, as well as any inherent defects that particular transmission might have.
When I purchased my '98 auto with 42K on it, on the drive home it would shift into 2nd with a bang. This was not noticed while test-driving it (Murphy's Law???). That tranny was replaced with a rebuilt under Saab warranty. This "new" tranny leaked fluid from the get-go. No matter what the dealer did to correct it, I had a constant flood of pink fluid in my garage. It turns out that the hole drilled into the tranny case for the shift linkage to enter it was too large for the seal. They then replaced that tranny with yet another rebuilt one, and so far, not a problem to speak of (this is now 20K miles later).
I have mods in my car that has given it more power (hp and torque) than a stock Aero. And I do like to exploit this extra goodness from time to time. I stick to the rules of what I mentioned above, as well as I shift the tranny like a stick when driving the car hard. Otherwise, I let it do its own thing by itself when cruising. Hopefully, this will allow the tranny to perform well for a long time.
BUT, you never know what you're buying. You could very well be asking the same question as to the steering rack, the turbo, the engine itself. It all depends upon how well it was maintained before. Just remember, though, that at 91K miles, many parts have "loosened up" and/or are used up, and so will need replacement. Small price(s) to pay for such a sweet and exhilarating ride!!!!!!!
Good luck!
