Later models (as you have) seem to be a little longer lived - the broader torque band on the 2.3 motors allows for less shifting, and you don't need to hammer it as hard as on the earlier 2.0 motors to keep up with traffic.
Joe 98 is right on about the need to keep the fluid clean, and it's easy to do on this model. You can drain the fluid every-other oil change and just change the screen as part of a major service. There's a drain plug, and it takes *precisely* 4.5 quarts to refill. My (young) '97 shifted beautifully - if there's any harshness in the shifting or untoward noises in the tranny, either walk or negotiate a lower price. Mind *did* get a (warranty) new oil pump b/c it whined. (the tranny does have a lot of gear noise in 1st, but second and up should be silent).
The longest mileage 9K A/T I know of was pushing 250,000 miles when it was put aside ... and the owner used it for towing! But he kept the fluid clean.
