I have one of those auto trannies. If you look around the board you'll find they aren't the most reliable piece of equipment. However, if you treat it well it may treat you well. My '89 9KT is at nearly 215,000 miles and that is with the original transmission. I don't know for certain but I'm guessing the meticulous maintenance from the previous owner plays a huge part in my transmissions long life. I regularly check the fluid and fix any leaking lines ASAP. I also change the fluid and filter often. I use care when checking the fluid to ensure that I don't get any crud down the dipstick tube as well. A well established indie SAAB technician explained the valve body of these transmissions as being quite intricate and a small amount of dirt can cause a lot of grief. If that fluid even looks brown or smells bad flush it out. A few quarts of ATF is a whole lot easier to buy than a rebuilt trans.
As you probably already know burnouts and reverse drops are killers of the SAAB/ZF Auto Trans.
Wow, 85,000 miles. That must be like driving a new car!
For what it's worth, I've used eEuroparts.com numerous times and Todd does a fantastic job. The prices are awesome as well.
Have fun.
