Rust is not the problem but the shape of the lock nut. Posted by SWEDECAR [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Anders, ever try heat?, KeithR, Thu, 18 Sep 2003 19:12:25 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Some lock nuts comes off without a problem (like the seven on exhaust manifold) but the two other style lock nut that Saab is using can sometimes freeze up on the threads when trying to unscrew.
When you try to screw it back on again it seizes even more and finally sticks (welds) to the stud. Doesn't happen all the time but ones in awhile.
Steve was asking about the labor to do this and I always have to paint the darkest picture since I don't want anyone to think it's a breeze and than find out the hard way.
If one Saab owner have succesfully replaced the turbo on his car doesn't mean that a Saab mechanic have been just as lucky with hundreds of turbos.
I have seen all scenarios through the years and had to tackle each problem in its own way, using heat, rust oil, air hammers and nut cutters.
