Not 100% certain on a 93 but ...the main fuel pump in my older SAAB's (up to 88) had a "pre-pump" some electric, some mechanical that would keep a small fuel tank the main pump sat in full. I have had the "pre-pump" fail and a hole in an internal line cause the exact same problem. The reason I don't think its your main pump is filling it up made the car run. Every main pump failure I have had did not care how much fuel was in the tank, every pre-pump failure did. My guess...The fuel leval got below the leval the car would run without the pre-pump. The bad news is running the main pump dry (empty) is the worst thing you can do to it. The fuel is the lubricant and the coolant for the pump. Clear as mud? I didn't understand untill I had one all apart in front of me...then it made sense. The pre-pump keeps the small tank full so you don't run lean enjoying your car around a tight corner or getting on it or using the brakes hard.
