Yeah... no need to remove it. Just unplug the electrical connnector (push the silver wire all the way down and it should come off easily) and check the pins on the throttle. I think most people are worried first about the cost and mystery of the throttle body, so this is not a bad place to start.
For the test of the motor, Saab says you should draw a vacuum on the hose, and move the throttle plate by hand. I just pulled the hose of the safety valve and sucked on it. You can take the rubber boot off the throttle and reach in and move it. However, when the car is hot, the throttle plate is... hot... and you need long fingers to reach it. (A wise man once warned me-- hot metal looks just like cold metal. Really, really hot metal is a different story.)
I suppose this same method would be best for the other tests, but I didn't find it necessary. Pulling on the cable going into the throttle seemed to work fine. But then, mine was so obviously bad when it was bad.
For the record, pins 1 and 7 control the motor. Pins 2, 4, and 6 go to the potentiometer that shows what position the throttle plate is at. Pins 3 and 5 are the safety switch that tells the computer whether the throttle is closed or not.
Like I said, testing the throttle is not necessarily the most logical place to start, but I think everyone's big worry when they have a problem is the throttle, and if that's not your problem it's good to get it off your mind.
NOTE: my mechanic told me I needed a new throttle body because the connector had movement in it. This was wrong. Saab says that it is normal for the connector to pivot 2-13°.
