The safe and solid part is there with a 9K or a 9-5. The 9-5 may be a bit better on maintenance, but that's always a wild card anyway if the one you get has high miles.
But the bigger thing IMHO, is that I'm not sure a 9-5 OR a 9000 CSE is the best thing for a young driver. Solo command of a 200 hp, 135+ mph car of any make or model can be risky business. The drug of speed and acceleration is just too addicting. As we all know.... ;-)
I'm a few months away from the same situation as you: My daughter is about to start driving and there's no way I'll put her in charge of my CSE until she has some significant experience--and she's a real conservative kid!. She will likely get my old 8-valve non-turbo C900. She wants the old beast and thinks it's cool, as do her friends, so it works all around.
And check the insurance for having your son in a 9K. The insurance company knows it's a turbo, and may hit you accordingly. With my daughter insured as an occasional driver on the 9K and my wife's Explorer and as primary driver the C900, our total insurance bill goes up over a grand (in NH). It'd be about 70% more if she was a boy. Yow!
Good luck.
