going to drive the car, you maybe the best person to judge. Teenages behave very differently in front of adults than with their peers. What all we can hope for is they actually listen and do what we hope they would do. I think many here have been through that.
Either a 9000 or a 9-5 would be a good choice. The 9-5 is likely a bit safer according to various crash tests. I actually would suggest a late model 9000 full pressure turbo instead of the non-turbo or LPT, more so if it is going to be an automatic. Having a more responsive car is always safer in my book. Having a low-power car doesn't mean your son isn't going to drive it fast, just that it takes longer for the car to get up to speed.
The question is what you son would do if he is challenged to do stupid things. Yes, in this case, your son probably would get into such situations more if he has a perceived fast car.
So, you want a responsive car with good brakes, good crash protection, reasonable reliability and all at a reasonable price. Would a 9000 turbo or a 9-5 fit :-) ? I think the answer is yes. Also, remember the 9000 is a hatchback and is great for your son to pack his things off to college.
