The fuel pump only runs when the engine is running - it uses the pulses from the ignition. This is a safety feature - if the car were in an accident, it would be nice to stop pumping fuel into a potentially smashed and red hot engine compartment.
Of course, you can't start the car without fuel - so when you first turn the key, the fuel pump runs, just as Zeke says, and will then shut off until it sees ignition pulses. So yes, expect it to stop humming.
