'95 Turbo question Posted by Peter [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() |
Purchased a '95 Aero w/ 120,000 and had my usual mechanic give the once over. He said that something didn't seem quite right w/ the wiring around the Turbo but to get a double check from a SAAB dealer to see what they said. Dealer wanted arm and a leg and seemed reluctant to comply. So in the meantime I also queried the original seller.
The reply:
Turbo - I was scratching my head about the "wiring" until I realized he is talking about the manual boost controller (little metal (brass) thing up towards the top of the radiator). Saab has what they call an APC controller. In simple terms this controls the level of boost. The only problem with the APC solenoid is they go bad on a regular basis. The manual boost controller replaces the APC and I've been running it on that car for a long time. You can just as easily remove the manual boost controller and reattach the APC (I can send instructions). Car will run fine with the old APC solenoid, just not have quite as much power (probably 20 horse power difference).
I asked because the car had also not passed it's emmissions test and the seller suggested dumping a can of "emissions pass" (found at any local parts store). This didn't seem like a good fix for a diagnosed problem with a faulty catalytic converter (My Mechanic's finding and SAAB dealer's diagnostic verified) [I did replace and the car did pass w/ flying colors].
I have seen some other postings regarding turbo issues but they don't seem to match with what is in the seller's statement. Admittedly I am only just becoming mechanically savvy and don't know too much but would love to learn more. Any help or suggestions would be of great use. Thanks -Peter
