As I understand it...Apparentlty the molecules of refrigerant gas slowly leak out of the system (this is normal) and eventually the pressure will be so low that the AC will not switch on- this is to protect the compressor. By not having the AC fully charged and lubricated this can affect the life of the compressor, and o- rings etc...leading to even faster leaking. My mechanic says the AC should be re-charged every year or two for maximum protection and effeciency...and when you find out how much it costs to fix a poorly serviced AC it is not too much trouble to go to...
While on 'heat' the AC should be running occasionally to dry out the warm air to stop the car fogging up inside..it is programmed to do this. This also ensures that the AC system gas and lubricant are flushed through the system to keep every thing lubricarted and swollen...that sounds bad...but it helps stop the gas leaking out!!!
