Hmmm, my 1980 C900 has been recharged once, and that was when I busted a hose loose to take out the motor. My 1988 9k has been recharged twice, both times after repairs. But, one thing I have noticed living in different climates, you need to use the A/C regular.
Now to get technical. The front seal (behind the pulley) is called a "carbon rubbing seal" We use a lot of them in jet engines. They require a small film of oil on them to work. If they are not used regullar (like every week) they dry out and then they leak and have to be replaced. What does this mean to the SAAB owner/DIYer? Use the A/C even if you don't need it. Expect to replace the compressor if you store the car for a period of time. The A/C will get a little more expensive to fix if you put it off, but then it will be this much money and no more. The GOOD news!!!!With an investment of around $600 for tools you can become the "expert". A certificate to do mobile refridgerants can be had on-line (open book test) and then it's just find the right store! Minimum equiptment is a vacume pump and a set of service gauges. Then a little knowledge of conversion to R-134A and electric's.
