Hi,
Well, if you like the idea of Saab - the concept of owning a hatchback, luxury, performance sedan, do yourself a favor and don't ruin the experience by buying an 86 model. Because this was the first year for 9000 in North America, many improvements were made in the subsequent model year, making them FAR superior.
Further, because older Saabs are so cheap, there is absolutely no reason for you not to look at newer MY like 89 and on. The price will not increase much if at all, however the quality and the chance of durability will increase exponentially.
Lastly, because I've owned an 86, let me tell you the weakness:
1. Turbo - Oil cooled ONLY (87> water + oil) Prone to failure
2. 5 speed tranny is CRAP, there was inferior materials used that year
