I'd guess there's a high correlation between populations which frequently wash and wax their cars and populations which regularly change oil, brake fluid, and accessory belts.
I bought a car just like this (an 87 turbo w/ 5spd) and the clutch gave out 3 weeks later. I gave up on the car about a year and a half later because, although I could continue to repair it, the deteriorating condition of the body made it not worth the time and money. If you do all the repairs yourself (or your daughter does them) expect to pay roughly $500-$1000 per year for tools/parts. I can't imagine what a mechanic would charge.
I paid $400 for my first saab, and in retrospect that was too much.
on the other hand they're fast, fun, and not too hard to work on.
