You will save money by disabling the balance shafts. You won't have to pay for new shaft sprockets, new balance chain, and new balance chain guides. I'm not sure the cost for parts, but it's not inconsequential. The labor is minimal - mostly parts.
The drawback is increased vibration - that's why they're in there in the first place. They were put in because the 2.3 won't produce a near-luxury car level of vibration without them. OK, so how much will your engine vibrate without shafts? Good question - it varies from engine to engine. It will increase. You'll notice a lot at higher RPM, especially on the highway. I definately wouldn't recommend it if you have aftermarket motor mounts. The bad news is that if you find the vibration unnacceptable, the fix is pretty expensive - paying for the labor to open things back up.
I'd put it this way - if your car is pretty nice, and you're looking for another 50K, then I'd pay for renewing the shafts. A nice car that vibrates on the highway will very quickly grow stale. However, if the car is ragged, and you're just looking to limp it along for a while longer, and are already living with a degraded car (no A/C, drooping headliner, sticky doors...), then save the money.
