Tom, you should consider finding a transaxle with 100k miles less on it - I'd price one at B&D/Greenleaf - a reputable salvage yard in central MA. There are plenty of yards near you, also. I'm sure the prices are pretty competitive in this state. That would be the quickest and easiest route, and probably the least expensive one. I would negotiate purchase with no core exchange - that way you could have the present one fixed, at your convenience, by Ericcson's - if you decide you want to. You have to split the engine to address the clutch, so you might as well take care of the transaxle, too. The quickest fix I see is buying another lower mileage transaxle as soon as it presents itself - I would recommend a '97 or '98. My present transaxle, which I've put over 50k miles upon, is a salvage yard transaxle. When I bought it, they were going for $750. Now, they're less......good luck in whatever you decide.
