Ben,
I have an 89 9kt with about the same amount of miles on it and also an automatic tranny. Mine is quite "doggy" initially, too, however there is a simple, cheap timing fix (If yours has vacuum advance) that makes a HUGE difference. There are many posts on this board about how to do it. What needs to be accomplished is to increase the amount of ignition Retard that is done by the vacuum unit on the distrubutor. This allows the base timing (idle) to be advanced, which makes the low end way more snappy. My mileage also increased about 8% as a bonus. I think my timing ended up somewhere around 20* advance at idle, and full retard seemed best at around 5*.
There are many references to "bending the stop" in vacuum unit to allow for more retard, but this is hit or miss. I went one better, and made an adjustable stop out of a piece of phenolic composite that I had (easy to shape), shaped it so it could not turn back and forth in the place where the original stop came from, and tapped a hole in it that lined up with the original location of the stop. By loosening the screw, I can set retard/advance limits wherever I want without talking the distrubutor apart.
Put in a search for "timing" or "distrubutor" and you'll find alot of info.
Like I say,it made a big difference. And, the advantage to being adjustable is that I can simply move it back to stock for emission tests.
BTW, MAKE SURE the automatic tranny is good. The rebuild cost on those is not a pretty site.
Dave
