In my quest to find a replacement for my '86 9kt, I've found another 9000 turbo, this one a '92 turbo with a 5 speed, and unfortunately, TCS. Otherwise, the car is in good mechanical shape.

My question is this :
Is it at all possible to disable or install an on/off switch for TCS?
I've got no problem cutting wires or building my own circuits. Just gimmie the schematics and a soldering iron!

Is it possible to retrofit this car with a later version of the engine management system (one with the on/off switch)? How about an earlier system without TCS ? There's a junked '91 in the local pick-n-pull that could be a good donor.

Or, is there something similar to the 'red box' APC unit that I have in my '86 that will eliminate this problem?

The reason I ask is that this car seems to have an intermittent fault in the tcs. When test driving it, the TCS light would randomly go on (no apparent rhyme or reason to it) and the engine would kick over into limp-home mode. If you turned the car off, and then back on, everything would be OK, at least for a little while. This happened twice at the beginning of a 20 minute test drive. For the last 15 minutes of the test-drive, though, everything was fine.

The dealer says that they noticed the light coming on sporadically, and put it on diagnostics, but didn't find anything (not surprising).

I could just fix the problem, and not worry too much about on/off; but I would like to have the ability to disable this 'feature' to make driving possible if the erronious fault returned.

Thanks all!
