Because idle functions are controlled by the electronic throttle system, with the electronic throttle disabled (limp home mode) idle controls are also disabled.
Sometimes the car runs crappily but keeps running; other times something makes it just refuse to behave in anything near a civil tone.
You might try disconnecting the battery for a few hours and give the computer a chance to clear its memory. Could be you'll go along fine for awhile and can repeat this step next time limp home rears its head.
