Hi,
I took the chance and got a brand new auto trans to replace the fried one in my '88 CD 2.0T. I've been driving it for a year now, next week I'm leaving it for a couple of days at dealers' to diagnose/fix harsh shifting in a couple of situations. There's one year of warranty still left.
Actually, the shifting behaviour has been the same all along, but I got tired of going to the dealer all the time, so I've postponed this until now.
The shift up from 2 to 3 under light or no throttle is quite harsh. At worst, it really kicks in, feeling like a car behind you giving the Saab a small push. With more throttle it does not feel that bad, and then it can occasionally be really smooth. Also, the downshift from 4 to 3 feels quite distinctive when slowing down with no throttle applied.
The old trans (as long as it worked) did not behave like this. As the transmission is completely new, I wonder if there are some changes in the transmission compared to the original '88 model, which might cause differing operation. Especially those of you driving newer models - how's your box shifting?
One visible difference between the old and new box is the default kick-down cable adjustment. In the old, it was as per Haynes instructions, the pressed clip 2mm from the adjustment sheath. In the new, the clip rests on the sheath when throttle is at idle, leaving just a little slack when the throttle is moved. I've experimented with tightening the cable so that the clip is at 2mm from sheath - The no-throttle harshness stays, but all the other shifts become too firm, nudging the car on every shift.
Any opinions are appreciated.
