That's almost certainly a clutch cylinder problem. The master cylinder is quite easy to change, and the part is about $130. There is a rebuild kit available for about $9, but often the walls of the cylinder are corroded to the point where a rebuild kit cannot seal. This was the case with my '88.
The other possibility is the slave cylinder... much more expensive. To change this one, the transmission has to come out. So you're looking at $1000, since you might as well change the clutch once you've gone that far...
Check your brake fluid reservoir. It's also possible that the level has dropped far enough that air was admitted to the system, in which case you might get by just bleeding the system. But most likely the reason that the fluid went away was a bad cylinder at one end.
