Like someone said earlier, check the hose from the reservoir first. I recall reading somewhere (quasi, perhaps) that early cars used material that brake fluid attacked, leading to sludge in the master.

I've also heard of problems with the master to slave line.

And have also heard that replacing the master alone often solved the problem. Much easier than pulling the transmission!

In my case, my '88 S was sorely neglected when I bought it for $500. The clutch pedal engaged very, very close to the floor, and the person I bought it from said it had done so for the year he had owned it (fluid was about the colour of coke). This is a common symptom of imminent failure of the master... how was your pedal last week? Mine went very clearly from extremely low but fully disengaging the clutch, to even lower and not disengaging at all. i.e. drove to work, no indication of problem. Went to leave for the day, won't disengage.

Tried a master kit, no improvement. Stuff that came out when I emptied master was like mud, and I could hear the master wheezing after the rebuild.

Replaced master with brand new. Some pedal, but now the fluid went away (into the transmission) with every actuation. So the slave was bad, too.

Hope you don't have to drop the transmission in the snow!
