Audi A4, 1.8T. My brother owns one and I drive it every chance I get.
Smaller than a 9000, it handles great, good brakes, beautiful paint and a nice interior in a German sort of way. At 60,000 miles it's been as reliable as a hammer.
The only place it really gives way to the 9000 is the engine. The 1.8 liter engine doesn't have the displacement to be competetive against a Saab Aero. It is, however, comparable to an early 9000 or a 2.0 litre 900.
Most are all wheel drive, but some of the early models can be found as front wheel drive. I'd expect the front wheel drive versions to be fairly inexpensive on the used market, as they were around 20k new.
Good Luck
