Remember we're talking 9K competitors here, so used cars 5-10 years old with plenty of passenger room and cargo space.

re 7000 cars in NA: who knows what a Saab is (they're Japanese, right)? My blue haired granny knows what a BMW is. Besides, they sold 140k (?) worldwide, mostly in places (Europe) where people are way smarter about cars than the vast NA public.

BMW: Sedans have no cargo space. 3 series too small, limited back seat, wagons too new, expensive and rare. 5 series wagon is a contender, I'd drive one. But very hard to find. And the '95s had a serious engine recall that many people didn't get done (BMW was replacing engines for block porosity IIRC).

Lexus: no wagon = no cargo space (comparing to 9K, remember?). Most of them totally soulless (repackaged Camry). Stunning reliability; resale value is good (which is good if you're buying a car and planning to sell it soon).

Audi: basically, see BMW. A4 too small, wagons too rare. Overweight. 4wd is available if you believe the marketing that says you need it. An A6 wagon would be a nice choice. Expensive maintenance.

Acura: see Lexus.

Nissan/Infiniti: Cargo space? Legroom limited. The G35 is nice but too new. The interiors are wearing out REAL FAST on these cars - I'm seeing lease returns with no finish left on the (hard plastic) armrests at all.

Price range: LIST price is the same. But remember good old Saab discounts/ depreciation...

I'm looking at what to do to replace my 9K, and my options are:

9-5 Wagon (way ahead)
Volvo 850/V70 wagon
Some kind of midsized SUV (Toyota Highlander/Nissan Pathfinder)

My main buying points - seat comfort, front legroom, cargo space.
